Laser diodes are essential components in sectors such as medicine, manufacturing, transport, the environment and defense. However, their cost and performance are often hampered by the limitations of traditional substrates and manufacturing processes.

To meet these challenges, a partnership between the Université de Sherbrooke and two complementary industrial companies has been formed, exploiting the innovative PEELER technique developed by the Université de Sherbrooke. They aim to develop high-performance laser diodes using reusable engineered substrates, promising improved efficiency, higher performance, lower manufacturing costs and reduced environmental impact.

The potential spin-offs of this collaboration are manifold: reducing Quebec’s dependence on global supply chains, training the next generation in a field where there is a severe shortage of manpower, and strengthening Quebec’s leadership in this field. In addition, continuous improvement of the PEELER technology should enable multiple reuse of germanium substrates, create a supply chain between the two project partners, and enable large-scale manufacture of high-performance, cost-competitive lasers.
