Secondary sources of radiation and particles have numerous scientific, industrial, and medical applications. To generate X-rays, there are various approaches, including large-scale facilities such as synchrotrons and free-electron lasers. These are rare and very expensive, requiring investments of hundreds of millions or even billions. Other approaches are based on the use of laser-matter interaction.
In this context, we propose a university-industry collaboration with the companies few-cycle Inc. and Amplitude to develop the next generation of high-power femtosecond laser systems to generate high-flux X-ray sources. These X-ray sources will be used to develop experimental facilities for the advanced characterization of materials, including quantum materials and those used in batteries. These two sectors are strategic for Quebec, with support for two innovation clusters: the Energy Transition Valley and DistritQ.
