Today’s technologies enable autonomous cars and drones to detect and avoid obstacles at high speed. Why not place a set of sensors on one or two light supports that can be carried by a visually impaired person, to help them detect and avoid obstacles and make it easier to navigate the street?

This was the origin of our project idea for an all-in-one, turnkey system that could be deployed on a smartphone to detect obstacles encountered by a visually impaired person in real time and alert them in an intelligible way, without saturating them with information. The cornerstone of the project is a machine-learning algorithm capable of identifying obstacles in real time, despite the difficulty of implementing such a complex system in such a detailed environment.
